DIY Lace Jewelry

GUEST DIY WEDNESDAY: Today marks the final DIY from our lovely friend, Anna, before she embarks on life as a graduate student! Thanks for sharing your crafty-self with us here at Green Eyed Monster, and GOOD LUCK, pretty lady!

It seems that granny-chic is all the rage now-a-days and I’m all for it! By this I mean, the lace and flowery style of grandmas the world over is being transformed into something fabulously fashionable for the rest of us. Turns out granny had a few things right: clean underwear everyday and some lacy details. We aren’t surprised.

GIVEAWAY ALERT: In addition to winning a pair of Anna’s earrings featured above, you will win an upcycled lace necklace thanks to Elliott Elephant and another pair of lace earrings from Teta Bina. To enter, comment on this post and tell us one of the most important things that your grandmother (or grandfather) taught you. Our Grammy taught us how to make a mean cup of tea, play Hearts like a champ, and needlepoint the ultimate preppy doorstop.

Materials:
Scissors
Lace pieces, often called “bridal” lace and found around the necks of granny dresses or on table cloths
Earring findings, the kind that latch at the back.

Directions:
1.  Select the portion of lace you want to make into earrings and carefully snip it out of the lace piece.
2.  Trim off all extra bits and pieces you don’t want on your earrings.
3. Poke the back of the earring piece through the top the piece of lace. If you cut the lace very close, you may want to put a dab of glue on here. Wear and enjoy!

It is hard to think of just one thing that my grandma taught me. At least the most important one. But if I had to choose, it would be love. She was the one who taught me how to love people, animals, nature and myself. And I am glad to find so much of her in myself.

    1. Must. Make. Lace. Earrings. NOW! :)
    2. Granny taught me how to mix a great martini, play bridge until dawn with your friends, to appreciate your appearance, and how to write kick ass thank you notes. She was the *definition* of a true Southern belle and I adored her for it.

  • My Oma tried time and again when I was younger to knit. She would get exasperated with my inability to hold a needle right and I hated sitting still for more than ten minutes. She gave up trying when I was around 12.

Que 10 years later. I learn how to knit and I love it. For Christmas that year I knit her three potholders and a scarf and the look on her face was the best thing I’d ever seen. She was so proud of me she cried in front of the whole family.

My Oma taught me patience. And endurance. And not just through knitting. She and my Opa have amazing histories. My Oma and her parents hid Jews fleeing from Hitler in their basement. My Opa helped runaways and had to hide in a chimney for two days when the Nazis came after him. Their lives have always been such an inspiration to me and I have learned so much from them through their strength and courage. I figured, if my Oma can do that, the least I can do is sit down and do something she had wanted me to do since I was a little girl. So I knit for her. And I discovered just how much I loved it. :) Thanks, Oma!

My bubbe taught me that if you are going to open your mouth to share your opinion, you need to be prepared to open your hand and your heart. She woudl say it to me in yiddish so that added its own layer of meaning, but I think I’ve translated the point :)

my grandmother taught me to make biscuits and boiled custard. I am the only grandchild who ever asked about those things, so she has passed all of her cookbooks and recipe cards down to me-complete with written in changes and notes.

  • My grandmother taught me that ” the women in our family don’t make good nuns.” That’s what she told me when I asked why she had left Germany when she was 16. Seems once she’d graduated from high school her father told her she had to join a convent. So she hopped on a ship and sailed across the ocean, landed on Ellis Island in 1911 and lived in NYC (not in a nunnery).

  • My grandma taught me to cherish your loved ones while you have them with you.

My grammy taught me to never let the small things bother you and when in doubt always laugh, it makes everyone around you feel more comfortable.

  • My grandmother taught me that it probably takes a lot for someone to be happy, but only a little for everything to all crumble down, so don’t ever let the little things take you for granted, everything will be ok. And if it’s not, grandma will be right behind you to catch you when you fall. How I love my grandma.

  • My grandfather taught me how important creativity is. I painted when I was younger and then stopped after I got busy with life. He asked me why I stopped creating b/c he had always loved my art. I had no good answer so ever since then I have been actively creativing jewelry and art =). He has his own outlets for creativity and he says they make life more enjoyable.

You’ve probably heard the saying “The early bird gets the worm”. I’m not totally convinced that it’s true, I see birds eating all day long. But there might just be something to it since many successful people seem to share the habit of getting up early.

My grandmother was one of them. She would always be up around 5am and by the time the rest of the world was rolling out of bed, she had already walked 5 kilometers or more and eaten her breakfast. Just imagine how much more you could get done in a day if you got out of bed an hour earlier.

I have also read in several health related books that going to bed early and getting up early is better for your health. Seeing as my grandmother lived to be 91, there might just be something to this.

  • My grandmas (I have two:-) taught me how to shake hands properly and how to eat macaroni with sugar! OK, they also taught me how to sew, bake or make all kind of delicious things. Unfortunately I have forgotten most of the things:-(

  • Kayla

My granny taught me how to crochet and together we’re learning to knit. Every time I visit, she has armfuls of yarn to pass along to me!

My grandma taught me how not to care what anyone else says, and how to live your life like you’ll always be young! She walks in a room and akes everyone laugh but can also be serious when the time is needed. Her personality is one of a kind and she’s taught me a little of how to love. I love you Grandam Judy!! <3
