LORENA MARANON {win it wednesday}

Ever since Ash tackled the whale embroidery for Courtland’s birth announcement, and realized just what a skill this needlecraft is, she’s been fascinated by talented embroidery artists and designers. It was during one of her embroidery googling fests that she came upon Lorena Marañón’s work and drooled with delight. Peter Pan collars are the hotness right now, but we haven’t seen anything nearly as amazing as Lorena’s stiff collar.  And her jewelry, particularly the necklaces, just, WOW! We would happily don any one of her pieces ’round our necks to add a bit of rainbow explosion to our ensemble. A scarf, a collar, a necklace – you name it. We’ll wear it! Who says the winter is the season of greys and blacks? Let’s jazz it up and brighten these darker days with Lorena’s pieces.

ENVIABLE PERK: Beautiful, handmade geometric embroidery in explosions of color. Our fav.

Santa’s workshop is set up chez Cart, and now it’s time to dive in and get to wrapping. One of my favorite materials to use as wrapping paper is brown paper grocery bags. And this year, I have stacks of my daughter’s artwork from preschool that I can also repurpose as wrapping paper.

Now, in terms of trimmings for said wrappings, I usually opt for ribbon and twine, but this year I was sent a pack of Designer Duct Tape and I’ve become a junkie for the stuff. We all know duct tape is the standard fix-it-all. My husband swears by the stuff. The fact that I can now use it as decorative accents is just pure awesome.

Here’s how I adorned an array of gifts, including some shipping boxes, for this year’s holiday.

I even tackled an enormous box that arrived for me and James that we were instructed to not open until Xmas. Rather than stare at a brown box under the tree for the next two weeks, I decided to gussy it up with some duct tape.

You can nab the tape in 14 different patterns here.

I’m also scheming of ways to make ornaments, garlands, even duct-tape wrapped pencils for stocking stuffers with the leftover rolls. Here’s a video to really kick start your creations!

FLUME {tunesday}

This is another song that makes me picture myself snowboarding/skateboarding/cruising on my bike or on my boat or in my Jeep. I found it because of this amazing RipCurl surfing video that uses 30 GoPro cameras in an array to make a frozen moment in time where you can rotate around a figure in 3D – watch it and be amazed! Then throw on the full Sleepless track and cruise around town doing whatever you think is cool. You can purchase the track here.

Talk about simple upcycling! Slice up a paper towel or toilet paper roll and you’ve got yourself a glittery, star ornament!
